Growing up, this simple braised dish was always an occasion.

INGREDIENTS

1 Tblsp. Oil

1.5-2 lb. brisket

1 large onion, diced

3 oz. ketchup

garlic powder to taste

6 (or more) medium potatoes, cut to about two inches

INSTRUCTIONS

Heat oil on high in bottom of dutch oven or similar heavy pot. Rinse and dry meat, then brown in oil. Remove.

Cook onion in remaining oil until lightly browned, then lower heat to simmer and add 8 oz. water, garlic powder, and ketchup. Stir.

Return meat to pot and simmer, turning every half hour for about two hours, until soft.

Remove meat.

Add potatoes and simmer until soft. Cut cooled meat across the grain, and return slices to pot while potatoes cook.
